hello@written-stl.com — one address, read by the people who make Written. We answer within two working days, and within 24 hours for anything about somebody's safety or a report.

Reporting and blocking somebody

There is no tolerance for objectionable content or for abusive users. Both controls are in the app and neither requires writing to us first.

  • From a profile in Explore — open the profile's actions and choose Report. Reporting also blocks that person, so you will not see them again.
  • From a conversation — swipe the conversation in the Chat list and choose Report, or Unmatch to end it without an accusation. Both remove that person from your view.
  • By email — write to us about anything you have seen, including something you cannot reach in the app.

We act on every report within 24 hours. Where a report is upheld we remove the content and eject the account that provided it. Where the law requires it to be reported further, we report it.

Written does not verify anyone's identity or run background checks. Please meet in public, tell somebody where you are going, and leave if something feels wrong.

Changing or removing what Written holds

Strike something off your profile

Written builds your profile automatically, so it will sometimes surface something you would rather it did not. Any of it can be struck out.

  1. Open the Memories tab.
  2. Press and hold the entry — an artist, a channel, a podcast show, a sport or an event.
  3. Tap the cross that appears.

It is never used, never shown and never counted again, and it stays struck off through every snapshot after it — so you will not have to remove the same thing twice.

Correct your profile

Every field in Memories can be changed after it is first set — your name, your age, your gender, your district, education and occupation — and photographs can be replaced or removed one slot at a time.

Delete your account

  1. Open the Memories tab.
  2. Scroll to the bottom and tap Delete account.
  3. Confirm with Delete everything.

This removes your profile, your snapshots, your photographs and your conversations from our live systems within 7 days. Encrypted backups roll over on their own schedule and are never used to bring a deleted account back. There is nothing to email us about and nothing to wait for — the button does it.

Ask for a copy, or for something narrower to be deleted

Write to hello@written-stl.com from the address or with the phone number on your account. We will send you a copy of what we hold, or delete what you name, within 7 days.

Withdraw Google's access

In Written, the Memories page has two controls: Delete what was read erases everything read from YouTube and keeps the connection, and Disconnect YouTube also withdraws Written's access at Google. Both act immediately, and no later than 7 days.

You can equally review or withdraw Written's access to your Google account at myaccount.google.com/permissions, independently of anything in the app. Anything read from YouTube is deleted within 30 days of that — and in practice sooner, because it is deleted 30 days after it arrived regardless of whether anybody asks. The Google user data section of the privacy policy sets out every scope one at a time.

Things that go wrong

The Health permission sheet will not let me continue

Apple's sheet opens with every category switched off, and the Allow button stays greyed out until at least one is switched on. Turn on the ones you are happy to share — or use Turn On All — and Allow becomes tappable. Nothing is wrong with the app; this is how Apple draws it.

A source connected but found nothing

Some sources genuinely can be empty. Apple Podcasts only ever sees episodes downloaded to your phone. Apple Music reads your cloud library, so without an Apple Music subscription there may be nothing to read. And Health shows nothing if the categories you were asked about were left switched off.

Notifications are not arriving

iOS only asks once. If you said no, the switch lives in Settings → Notifications → Written. The app will tell you when it can see that they are off.

I want to sign in as somebody else

Signing out clears everything from the phone. Signing back in restores your profile and your garden from your account, so nothing is lost by doing it.
