Terms of Service

Effective 5 August 2026 · Last updated 5 August 2026

These terms govern your use of the Written iPhone app and this website. By creating an account you agree to them. If you do not, do not use Written.

Who may use Written

You must be 18 or older, and legally able to enter this agreement. One account per person. You may not use Written if we have previously removed your account.

Your account

You sign in with Apple, with Google, or with your phone number, and the security of your account rests on whichever you chose. Keep it protected. Tell us promptly if you believe someone else has reached your account.

You are responsible for what you put into Written — your photographs, what you write, and what you let it read. You confirm that you have the right to provide it, and that your photographs are of you.

What Written reads

Written reads from services you choose, one at a time, with your permission and read-only. Each read is a snapshot: it happens once, while you watch, and nothing keeps reading afterwards.

What a snapshot took, you can strike out in the app — any artist, channel, sport, show or event — and it is never used or shown again. You can delete your account at any time, which removes everything. What we do with what we read, and how long we keep it, is described in the Privacy Policy, which forms part of these terms.

Where a source has its own terms, those apply to you as well, and we cannot waive them on your behalf.

Written uses YouTube API Services. By connecting YouTube through Written, you agree to be bound by the YouTube Terms of Service. You can stop using the integration and revoke Written's access at any time — from the Memories page in Written, or at your Google Account permissions. Google's own handling of your data is governed by the Google Privacy Policy.

What is not allowed

  • Harassing, threatening, impersonating or deceiving anyone.
  • Posting sexual content involving minors, or content that is illegal, hateful or violent. Accounts doing this are removed without notice and reported where the law requires it.
  • Soliciting money, advertising, or using Written commercially.
  • Scraping, automating, reverse-engineering, or attempting to reach data belonging to other people.
  • Uploading photographs that are not of you, or that you do not have the right to use.

Reporting, blocking, and what we will do

There is no tolerance for objectionable content or for abusive users. That is a commitment about what we do, not a hope about how people behave, so here is exactly what it means.

  • You can report a person or a message from inside the app, in the conversation itself or from their profile.
  • You can block anyone: unmatching removes the conversation and takes that person out of your view, and reporting blocks them as well.
  • We act on every report within 24 hours. Where it is upheld we remove the content and eject the account that provided it.
  • We may also remove content, restrict features or end an account where these terms are broken or where someone's safety requires it. Where it is reasonable to do so, we will tell you why.

You can also write to hello@written-stl.com about anything you have seen, and Support sets out each of these step by step.

Your content

What you upload remains yours. You give us permission to store it and to show it inside Written to the people the app shows it to — that is the only reason we hold it, and the permission ends when you delete the content or your account.

Meeting people is your own risk

We do not run background checks. Written does not verify anyone's identity, criminal history or intentions. Take the same care you would meeting any stranger: meet in public, tell someone where you are going, and leave if something is wrong.

Availability, and what we do not promise

Written is offered as it is. We do not promise that it will be uninterrupted, that a match will be found, that a profile will be accurate, or that what it derives about you will be right. Features may change or be withdrawn.

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for anything arising out of your interactions with other people. Nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited.

Ending it

You may delete your account at any time from the Memories tab, and doing so ends these terms. We may end them if you break them. The sections on content, liability and disputes survive.

Changes

We may update these terms. The date at the top will change, and where the change is significant we will say so in the app before it takes effect. Continuing to use Written after that is acceptance.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Missouri, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules, and the courts of Missouri have jurisdiction — except where the law of your own country gives you the right to bring a claim locally, which these terms do not take away.
